Ancient Greek Myth and Modern Europe: A Struggle for Independence

2025-02-19

The ancient Greek myth of Europa, abducted by Zeus disguised as a bull and taken to the island of Crete, reminds us of dependence and lost autonomy.

Like the mythical beauty, Europe has long lived in luxury and comfort—under the protection of the United States, with cheap gas from Russia, affordable goods from China, and the freedom to engage in environmental activism and human rights advocacy.

She believed in universal values, avoided conflicts, and trusted that her allies would always stand by her side. Even when the largest genocidal war began on her borders, Europe failed to abandon its habits, continuing to believe in the inviolability of the liberal order.

The Shift: From Liberalism to Post-Liberalism

But suddenly, everything changed. Zeus (read: the USA) shifted its stance. From classical liberalism, which emphasized individualism, secularism, and universal human rights, it transitioned to post-liberalism. This new worldview challenges the very foundations on which Europe was built.

Post-Liberalism in Trump’s New Politics:

Conservative Revolution — Emphasis on Christian civilization, patriotism, and the traditional family.

Undermining the Liberal Order — Criticism of national identity erosion and the dismantling of traditional institutions.

Authoritarian Tendencies — Justification of strong leadership in times of crisis.

Anti-Globalism — Protectionism and support for domestic industries.

Thus, the United States, once the guarantor of the liberal order, has now become its critic. Europe finds itself at a crossroads: its former ally no longer shares its values, and the world around it grows increasingly hostile. Autocracies on its eastern borders, economic challenges, and energy dependence all demand a new European strategy.

A Strong Europe – Ukraine’s Best Ally

A strong, independent Europe that does not rely on the United States is a far better ally for Ukraine than a Europe that hesitates, always glancing toward its stern transatlantic Zeus. Such a Europe can respond more swiftly and effectively to the threats posed by Russia and provide Ukraine with the necessary support without being swayed by shifting political tides overseas.

The myth of Europa ends with her becoming Zeus’s wife, living a life of luxury. But today’s reality is different: Europe must find its own path, or it will be overtaken by autocracies and former allies alike. The age of luxury is over—now is the time for independence.
